Surf Weekend In Nags Head, NC

Hi guys, we hope that you all had a wonderful time this past weekend. The boys and I loaded up the van (okay tossed our gear in willy nilly) and took off on our annual trip to the Outerbanks for some surf, fun…

And most importantly to catch up with this guy. Man did we miss Surferboy this time around and as you can see he was gone so long he forgot how trigger happy I can be. Smile for the camera baby {wink}. Not only was the house unusually quiet but this latest surf trip has caused a permanent rift between the sofa and me. We are no longer on speaking terms since I had to pay a visit to the chiropractor. Tip: Don’t hang out with an uptight sofa no matter how cute he is.

DS and the crew of kids that he coaches were in Nags Head for a week competing in the ESA Easterns as well as the Rip Curl Gromsearch before the boys and I got there. MmmHmph…see groms. They are always up to something even when they are sitting still, knuckleheads.

The early morning sky in the Outerbanks is simply glorious guys. Something about the stark beauty of the barrier islands has always struck me as mystical. Winds whipping across the dunes, the wild Atlantic pounding against the shore yet welcoming even for its brusque nature.

An environment that is prime for aquatic gladiators such as Surferboy, beloved brothers and the fearless groms that follow.

Specks beyond the shore braving the chilly waters for that perfect set and ride all surfers endlessly long for.

So now that I have waxed poetic what did we actually do this weekend.

Well we watched coach in action, checking out the competition while passing along strategic tips.

Took in the picturesque view of the contest from the pier.

Channeled Captain Jack and rode a turtle or two.

Were inadvertently soaked up to our thighs by the gargantuan waves under the pier, but I’m not complaining. The best times to be had are dodging waves.

We crowned a potbelly pig mascot of the surf contest. All hail Prosciutto! Top sand snorter, lover of surfers. Seriously, that is his name.

Spent time cheering on the home team, I love how much these kids support one another. By the way, who has the bell kiddos?

Best of all we spent time on the beach with dad, which is priceless.

Something new for us this year, loads of family and friends came up for the contest. Fire + Meat = Happy Men. If there is a flame around my dad isn’t too far behind, trust me.

While the fellas were grilling M2 decided to dust off his skateboard and practice a few tricks. Not so sure doing kickflips that close to the picnic table was such a good idea. My idea of vacation fun does not include splinter removal. Good thing that boy has balance.

The boys also fell in love with the newest member of the family, baby Crue. He is so precious or as M1 put it, “He’s the cutest wittle ting on two wegs”. Crue has mad skills; he can reduce even teenage boys into chattering baby talkers. Now would someone please tell my boys to chill on the growing already!

It wouldn’t be a proper vacation without celebrating someone’s birthday. Say Happy {ribbit} Birthday to the adorable and beautiful Juliana, we did. Then we noshed on some cheesecake…yum!

Then of course, there was the Extreme Rock Paper Scissors battle. Y’all don’t play extreme rock, paper scissors. Mercy let me fill you in on the monkeys adaptation. If rock wins, punch your opponent really hard. If paper wins, shove them in the head. If scissors wins, poke them viciously. Boys, what can I tell you? However teaching this game to a couple of adults may have taught them a lesson…be afraid son, be very afraid.

Lastly, we drove up to Kittyhawk on Sunday to cheer on the crew during the Volcom Cooterfish Contest. It was windy. It was cold. We brought a whole new meaning to the word huddle.

However, as always time spent on the beach with good friends enjoying the ocean is glorious. We truly wish that all of you could have joined us.

Congratulations to everyone on Team SNC for all of their dedication and hard work, from the kids to the administrators y’all are the best!

Love and Hugs,

Shari-Tickled Red

Um, I think we need to be a cool surfer family like you guys. I wish we could come out to visit. Maybe next time we head to South Carolina to visit my MIL. ? YEs? Maybe?

–>Great pictures! I love, love, love, OBX. Next summer will be the first in almost five years that we’re not spending a week there. However, we’re going to Jamaica. I still love that it’s a 90 minute drive from Our beach and we’re there.

Great post!

Hope you had a wonderful time.

Hubby and I spent 10 days (w/Leah our spaniel) in the Outter Banks about 15 years ago. Loved it.
